Introduction:
On 24 April 2013, an eight-story commercial Building, Rana Plaza, collapsed in Sava, The search for the dead ended on 13 May with the death toll of 1,127. Approximately 2,500 Injured people were rescued from the building alive. It is considered to be the deadliest garment-factory accident in history, as well as the deadliest accidental structural failure in modern human history.
Description:
The building contained garment factories, a bank and several other shops. The shops and the bank on the lower floors were immediately closed after cracks were discovered in the building. Warning to avoid using the building alter cracks appeared the day before had been ignored. Garment workers were ordered to return the following day and the building collapsed during the morning rush-hour. There were many reasons behind this pathetic accident. The upper four floors had been built without permission of the authorities concerned. Besides, the building was planned for shops and offices-but not factories. Moreover, the risks were involved in placing factories inside a building designed only for shops and offices. So, the structure was potentially not strong enough to bear the weight and vibration of heavy machinery.
The after effect:
The after effect of the collapse was more pathetic. Nearly 4000 workers were in the building at the time of collapse. More than half of the victims were women, along with a number of their children who were in nursery facilities within the building. Among them 1,127 dead bodies were rescued and 2500 injured people were rescued. Even after 17 days a woman named Reshma was fivefold and rescued alive and almost unhurt under the rubble.
Conclusion:
The owner of the building has been arrested and the government is trying to investigate the fact and to punish the criminals responsible for this pathetic accident. People front all walks of society hope that such accident will never repeat and the general workers will be more conscious of life and safety.
