(6) Why do so many South Africans and other people believe he is a hero?
Nelson Mandela was a former president of South Africa, a former prisoner for his anti-apartheid activities one of the world symbols against racism. He was the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was an anti-apartheid activist and served 27 years in prison on Robben Island. He's 92 years old now and still seen as a powerful leader and icon in South Africa. He was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Growing up under apartheid and spending so many years in jail as a political prisoner contributed to who Manela is today. Ghandi began his activism in South Africa, he was familiar with apartheid as what was termed a 'colored person'. He took the activism he learned in SA to India. Mandela was influenced by him but there were distinct differences in philosophy. Mandela did not believe in non-violence. King was influenced by the writings Ghandi. Both Mandela and Ghandi came before him and he could look at both of their types of activism to the US civil rights movement. Manela's movement was more similar to the later black power movement. Mandela fought a very powerful enemy whose regime meant to keep black South Africans as a servant class. He gave up a major part of his life, and was very willing to risk death so that his people would be treated with dignity respect and justice.
