Abraham Lincoln Assassination

1. Birth and early years;Born in 1809 in a Log Cabin, son of an illiterate labor. He had little formal schooling. Worked early as a laborer in mills but continued his studies in leisure hours, especially law. 2. His political career; distinguishes himself as a forceful speaker; elected to state legislature (1834-41); Visited the Southern States and denounced slavery; Elected to the House of Representative (1849); in 1854 joined the newly formed Republican party. 3. Declared himself against slavery;"a house divided against itself cannot stand; a government cannot endure permanently half-slave." Nominated as a candidate for the Presidential Election elected by a clear majority in 1860. From Log Cabin to White House. 4. Civil War in USA and abolition of slavery:The Southern States—saw abolition of slavery coming and prepared for separation. Lincoln opposed and moved his troops—Civil War for 4 years. His firm policy succeeded. On January 1, 1863 he proclaimed abolition of slavery throughout America. The great speech at Gettysburg 'democracy—government of the people, by the people, for the people' 5. Re-election as President and death:in 1865 he was elected President for a second term. The rebels surrendered. Region work of peace: "with malice towards none, with charity for all.” But five days after the surrender he was shot dead at a theatre by Booth, an actor. Died next day—April 15, 1865. He is hailed as a very firm and efficient statesman and an ideal democrat.
